At Next Step Counseling and Neuropsychology, we offer insurance-based neuropsychological testing to help identify challenges related to attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and other cognitive domains. Our psychologists have many years of experience working with people across the lifespan—from school-aged children to older adults—who may be struggling with challenges such as attention and learning difficulties, memory concerns, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, or personality-related issues. We also work with individuals experiencing conditions like ADHD, intellectual disability, mild cognitive impairment, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and C-PTSD.
Our testing process is designed to give a complete picture of how a person is functioning. We carefully assess areas such as general thinking and reasoning (IQ), memory, learning, attention, and executive functioning skills like organization, focus, and self-control. We also look closely at how mental health factors such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood instability may be impacting cognitive and psychological performance.
Once testing is complete, clients (and, when appropriate, family members or care providers) are invited to a feedback session lasting about 45 minutes to an hour. During this meeting, we provide a clear and compassionate explanation of the results, including any diagnoses that are supported by the data. We emphasize practical, personalized recommendations so that clients leave with a clear sense of next steps and resources for support.
The written report that follows is detailed yet easy to understand. Unlike generic computer printouts, our reports are thoughtfully written, combining test data with clinical insight. Each report highlights both strengths and challenges, explains diagnoses in plain language, and offers recommendations that are tailored to the client’s unique needs. Our goal is for the evaluation to be both useful and empowering—for the client and for any professionals involved in their care.
Our clinic is partnered with a private pay practice that can, following neuropsychological testing, offer specialized testing at a reduced rate.
Autism Evaluations: While we don’t test for ASD, we can screen and if neuropsychological testing suggests an Autism specific evaluation is warranted patients can be referred for quick follow-up
Our clinicians are trained to recognize a range of soft signs of autism spectrum presentation, we do not provide formal autism diagnoses or use gold-standard tools such as the ADOS. However, if autism is a potential concern, we can conduct screenings and provide targeted referrals to qualified specialists who offer full diagnostic evaluations. We'll guide you through the next steps to ensure you and your family get the answers you need.
Learning Disabilities (LD):While we don’t test for learning disabilities, if neuropsychological testing suggests a specific learning disability - and there are concerns about getting testing/diagnoses through the school system, patients can be referred for quick follow-up
Our evaluations do not provide formal diagnoses of specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia. Because of insurance billing restrictions and the nature of our assessments, we are unable to offer educational testing that would meet criteria for school-based services or accommodations.
If our results suggest patterns of learning-related difficulties, we will provide you with referrals for comprehensive educational testing. We also partner with a trusted agency that offers accessible learning disability evaluations on our referral, helping you access the diagnoses and documentation schools often require but may not provide directly.
